Orthodontics: A Focus on Invisalign®
Orthodontic treatment is known to correct misalignments of the jaw and teeth. Additionally, general dentists offer orthodontics to patients who have gaps in their teeth or severe crowding. One of the most popular methods of treatment is called Invisalign®, which can be used in adults, as well as teenagers who have all of their teeth. When orthodontics is being considered, most general dentists will recommend Invisalign®, if the patient has mild to moderate dental issues.
Invisalign in orthodontics
The following information can be helpful to someone preparing to undergo orthodontic treatment, specifically Invisalign.
What is Invisalign®?
Invisalign® is a type of clear aligners that works to straighten the teeth, close small gaps and correct uneven bites. Unlike other methods of orthodontics, these aligners are one single oral piece that goes over the top or bottom arch of the teeth. Invisalign® is made of a flexible plastic material that is custom-made to fit the patient's teeth. They are removable and clear in color, which makes for a very flexible and discreet method of treatment.
How does Invisalign® work?
Invisalign works by shifting the teeth altogether. Unlike other methods of orthodontics, Invisalign moves the teeth all at once. When braces are being worn, the teeth shift individually based on the brackets and wires. However, with clear aligners, there is just one oral piece, which allows the teeth to move together.
The Invisalign software predicts how the teeth will shift, which allows for the creation of an entire set before the orthodontic treatment begins. Over the course of any orthodontic treatment, patients will visit their general dentist every two to three weeks to undergo adjustments. Adjustments allow the dentist to examine the teeth and monitor the progress. Additionally, with Invisalign, the patient will receive a new aligner for their teeth. The old aligner will simply be thrown out and replaced with the next one in the set.
Invisalign® compared to other orthodontic options
Invisalign, in comparison to other orthodontic treatment options, is relatively simple and extremely effective. Because the aligners are removable, the treatment is pretty easy for most patients. However, that is not to say that the patient does not have to wear their Invisalign regularly. In order for the orthodontic treatment to be successful, patients have to wear their Invisalign at least 23 hours a day.
Benefits of orthodontic treatment
Invisalign® as an orthodontic treatment option is beneficial for patients of all ages. Because they are clear in color, they offer discreetness, which is advantageous for adults who want to avoid having metal in their mouths. Additionally, because they are removable, patients can eat comfortably and practice oral hygiene without difficulty, which is not possible with braces or retainers.
